The Nigerian government has refuted claims that it sent a warship to Gambia in a bid to oust the country's embattled president, Yahya Jammeh, who refused to vacate the seat of power after losing a December 2016 presidential election to opposition leader Adama Barrow.

Abike Dabiri, President Buhari's Senior Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs, cited that the Navy ship headed to Gambia is there to evacuate Nigerians living in the country due to a suspected war looming.
