The move comes after allegations surfaced that Russians are spying on the United States and could have interfered in the results of the November 8 presidential elections which saw opposition leader Donald Trump emerge winner ahead of Obama's candidate, Hillary Clinton.
In a statement released today, Obama told the press,
"All Americans should be alarmed by Russia’s actions. I have ordered a number of actions in response to the Russian government’s aggressive harassment of US officials and cyber operations aimed at the US election.
"These actions follow repeated private and public warnings that we have issued to the Russian government, and are a necessary and appropriate response to efforts to harm US interests in violation of established international norms of behaviour"
