Brazillian side Chapecoense was billed to play Atletico Nacional in a Copa Sudamericana final match last week in Colombia, however, the match was not meant to be as nearly the entire squad died in a plane crash that killed 76 close to the Medellin International Airport in Colombia on Monday 28 November 2016.

Substitute goalkeeper Marcelo Boeck, a loanee from Sporting Lisbon, was among the few Chapecoense players who didn't board the flight. His agent, Antonio Araujo, explained that Marcelo seeked permission to celebrate his birthday that week and that was why he didn't travel.

According to Antonio,
"The club gave him permission and he didn't travel. It was great relief in a deeply sad moment because of the tragedy that has happened and it has hit the world of football," the agent told Portuguese press.

"When he found out what had happened, Marcelo went with his family to Chapecoense's stadium where he met players who hadn't travelled, I was able to speak to him and he is deeply sad because of everything that has happened."
