The flood was triggered by a rain which began on Friday - a once in 500 years occurrence - through Saturday and Sunday, leaving 5 people dead. Some coffins from destroyed graves were seen floating on a street on Sunday afternoon. The flood affected East Baton Rouge, Livingston, St. Helena and Tangipahoa most.

Describing the disaster on Sunday, governor John Bel Edwards said:
"It's not over. The water's going to rise in many areas. It's no time to let the guard down."
