Joe Chinakwe will have 100 lawyers in his defence counsel when the hearing of his "breach of public peace" case is called out at an Ogun State magistrates court next month. This was said by Barr. Inibehe Effiong, convener of the Coalition of Human Rights Defenders (COHRD).

Joe, a trader from Delta State was accused of intent to cause religious crises after he named his dog after Nigeria's president Muhammadu Buhari earlier this month.

Speaking on the development, Barrister Effiong explained on Thursday 25 August:
"We are currently assembling a team of public interest cum human rights lawyers (we are targeting 100 lawyers or more) for the defence of Chinakwe, pro bono, from the next court sitting if the police insist on going ahead with this case.

"Anyone that is still in doubt about the political nature of this case should search his inner conscience closely. Those using ethnicity, religion and political sentiments to obfuscate this case should know that Nigeria is a country of laws.

"I wish to inform the public that two spirited members of the public responded to my appeal for assistance to Mr. Joe Chinakwe. The first person donated the sum of N40,000 yesterday while the second donated N50,000 this morning."
